Going Coastal Named Wine Press Northwest's Wine of the Week

Westport Winery’s acclaimed sparkling Gewurztraminer aptly named Going Coastal was selected as Wine of the Week by Wine Press Northwest. This is the second time in 2010 that one of Westport’s wines was selected for this honor by the northwest’s preeminent wine publication. “There are only 52 weeks in the year and 750 wineries in the state, not to mention that the magazine also selects wines from Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia. To have two of our wines selected this year is amazing!” according to Kim Roberts.

The magazine’s editors agree as they said, “Two years ago, we didn't know much about this winery on Washington's coast. Then a friend who was from the area said we should try their wines. When samples arrived, we weren't sure what to think. Many of the wines had goofy names (Jetty Cat White, Boom Runner Merlot, Surfer's Last Syrah, Maritime Muscat). So we put the wines through our double-blind tasting - and they were universally delicious. In the past 18 months, we have reviewed Westport's wines 47 times, and we have come to the conclusion that behind the obvious fun the Roberts family is having with its name, there is some seriously good winemaking going on here.”

In the December 2010 issue of the magazine Going Coastal was reviewed by their tasting panel and that review was reiterated in the wine of the week announcement, “Sometimes, the Roberts family must feel as though they are going nuts with the huge assortment they offer visitors to their Aberdeen, Wash., winery. The number is around 30, and counting… and their attempt at bubbles from this German variety is stunning. Great mousse throws off aromas of Asian pear, lychee and Meyer lemon. Strong flavors follow with grapefruit, banana, passion fruit and anise. The residual sugar (3%) comes in check. Rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine.”

As luck would have it the winery’s owners, Blain and Kim Roberts, had already offered Going Coastal along with their carbonated cranberry wine Rapture of the Deep (a double gold medal winner at the Washington State Wine Competition in August) as special sale items to guests until January 2. Each of these wines is available for this brief time on a buy three get one free sale. The wines may not be substituted; however, there is no limit on the number of cases you may purchase on this sale!

The winery will be open New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Westport Winery and Vineyards By-the-Sea is located on the corner of Highway 105 and South Arbor Road halfway between Aberdeen and the Westport ‘Y’ and open daily, year around from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This award-winning business is open for lunch and dinner service Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For reservations call 360-648-2224.
